How Big Should an Urn Be?
According to the Cremation Association of North America (CANA), the ideal cremation urn size for ashes typically measures around 200 cubic inches. However, this can vary based on individual factors such as height and bone density.
When considering the cremation urn size, capacity is measured in cubic inches, with one cubic inch defined as a cube that is 1" long, 1" wide, and 1" deep. Most standard adult urns usually have an interior capacity of about 200 cubic inches, while "companion urns," designed for two people, generally hold around 400 cubic inches.
A 200 cubic inch cremation urn is regarded as the industry standard size for adults, suitable for the remains of nearly all adults. Nevertheless, exceptions may arise due to atypical bone density, larger body frames, variations in cremation processes, or the presence of pins and implants from surgeries. Despite these factors, the guideline remains applicable in most situations.
A common rule of thumb suggests that one pound of body weight translates to one cubic inch of cremated ashes measurement. This principle serves as a foundation for our urn size calculator, which can help you calculate urn volume easily. The relationship can be summarized as:
1 lb body weight = 1 cubic inch of remains.
For instance, if an individual weighs 175 lbs, they would require a 175 cubic inch urn. While there may be some variations, this calculation generally holds true, as the volume of remains is often slightly less than the individual’s body weight.
Measuring Cremated Ashes
To accurately measure the remains, place the plastic bag containing the ashes into a box with flat sides, such as a cardboard box, which is often how remains are packaged in a temporary urn box.
Next, measure the height, width, and depth (in inches) of the ashes within the box. Multiply these dimensions to find the total volume in cubic inches. For example, if the box measures 8" by 6" and the ashes fill it to a height of 3.75", you would calculate 180 cubic inches (8 x 6 x 3.75 = 180).
